August 11, 2011 - Jubilee to provide insurance cover for overseas entries in Concours

Nairobi, August 11 – For the sixth successive year, Jubilee Insurance will provide insurance cover on a complimentary basis for the motorcycles entered by overseas competitors in the 2011 AccessKenya Africa Concours d’Elegance to be held by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club at the Nairobi Racecourse on September 25th.

The Concours insurance agreement was signed by Lydia Kibaara, Jubilee Kenya General Manager, Short Term Business, and Bob Dewar, the Chairman of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club.

Ms Kibaara, said, “We at Jubilee are delighted to be associated once again with the Concours d’Elegance; particularly during the year we are celebrating our 75th year and to share  this milestone with the Concours d’Elegance which is recognized and sanctioned by FIM.AFRICA.”

Jubilee is the largest composite insurer in East Africa and provides long term and short term insurance through its group Companies in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Mauritius.

She added; “For several years the Concours has attracted car and motorcycle competitors from outside Kenya, and Jubilee is happy to provide complimentary insurance cover to strengthen the international status of Kenya’s classiest motor sport event.”

The motorcycles insured by Jubilee while on transit and in Nairobi for this year’s Concours are a 1943 Ariel entered by Eric Londesbrough of Britain and the South African entries of Steven Helm and Michael Milner-Smyth.  Helm will be competing with a 1911 Precision which is the oldest machine ever to appear at the Nairobi Racecourse and Michael will show a 1925 Douglas and a 1963 BMW.

Talking about the Concours, Bob Dewar, said, “The 2011 edition will be the 41st in the annual series organized by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club.  Already car entries for this year’s event are heading to the 60 mark and the list for motorcycles shows over 30 competitors.”

For the second consecutive year, the Concours d’Elegance has attracted a motorcycle from England. The Ariel which will be flown specially from London by British Airways for Eric Londesbrough, the Overseas Clubs Liaison and Affiliation Officer of the Vintage Motorcycle Club.   He will be making his first appearance at the Nairobi Racecourse and this will be a rare opportunity for Kenyan motoring enthusiasts to see an Ariel bike.

For the ninth year in succession, the Vintage Motorcycle Club of South Africa will be supporting the Concours d’Elegance with very rare machines. The Club Chairman Michael Milner-Smyth will contest the up to 350cc street motorcycle class with a 1925 Douglas and the 650cc category in a 1963 BMW.

Steven Helm another Johannesburg based enthusiast will pin his hopes on a 1911 Precision for capturing a podium prize. This bike will be the oldest ever motorcycle to be seen at the Nairobi Racecourse.

A significant number of the entries from Kenya are a 1930 Ford Model A entered by Nimrod Africa Limited.  This is a welcome addition to the pre-1940 class which also features the 1928 Ford Tudor of Phoenix Aviation.

Other cars which will be seen at the Nairobi Racecourse on September 25th for the first time are the 1974 Ferrari 308 GT4 of Marzio Kravos.  This will be the debut appearance of a Ferrari in the 41 year history of the Concours.

Motorcycle enthusiasts who have registered for this year’s Concours include Satpal Singh Jabbal with his 1925 DKW, Douglas Kiereini will show a 1980 Yamaha, Karl Pleitz will display a 1959 BMW and lady competitor, Gai Cullen will exhibit her 1960 Triumph.

The judging of the Concours cars and motorcycles is based on cleanliness and condition without reference to originality.  The process for cars commences on the Total inspection ramp in front of the Racecourse grand stands where officials assess the under side.  Subsequently cars are driven in front of the grand stands for checks on the external finish, the interior and boot and the engine compartment.

Motorcycles are marked in a similar way in the Racecourse parade ring.  Competitors ride their machines between the judging points giving spectators the opportunity to view the bikes.
